Happy Birthday Canada

Each year I look forward to celebrating a birthday party on July 1, with a little bit of sunshine of course. Yes, this year we will celebrate the 157 years that Canada has been a home and native land, for so many citizens. As we anticipate to celebrate this day, many of us will be going through our closets to find something fitting, with red and white colours, to wear for this occasion.

Flags will be held high and proudly waved to the music of bands playing, dancing, and song. The children will delight in seeing the displays of the red and white balloons. And the huge sized birthday cake is always a fascination for the children who are eagerly waiting in line for their turn too.

I am happy to call Canada my home, and I am grateful to our founding fathers, who were motivated to leave us with a code of conduct, morals and principles to live by for generations to come.

I am deeply indebted to all in the health care sector, especially those who have chosen medicine as their profession.

As our population increases here in the Cowichan Valley, I am deeply grateful for the new hospital being built in Duncan. However, I do have a concern. Will there be sufficient spaces with beds available for palliative care? Families who have sought these services for their loved ones have come away with so much appreciation for the care and a holistic approach in pain management. I hope this reality will resonate with many. Cicely Saunders would agree. RIP.

Happy Birthday Canada.
